I’ve already been on the subject before, and I had promised a post about RSS.
Well today is RSS awareness day, and RSS advocates should promote and raise the global awareness of RSS as a tool.
Not this time. Remember ODE? Well, it’s time to try again and this what is going to occupy my labour day afternoon.
Instead, I’m gonna link you to a very informative post on “Avventure Planetarie”, hoping Paolo will forgive me for the recent content piggybacking (Voyager, now RSS…)
It’s in Italian, (and I know a few readers will be pleased), but for you non-italian speakers, check out RSSday, the website promoting the event presenting RSS using a nice video. (with an awful audio, though)
Oh, and I expect to see a definite increase in RSS subscriptions in tomorrow stats, mmkay? :-)
Stay tuned, more to come.

Ok, let’s face it, the old layout simply sucked.
It looked better in the preview, so I put it on, then I said “Urgh, oh well, let’s keep it for a few days while I find something else”. Then it just stuck.
Now the visits are increasing and it’s time to put on the Sunday outfit. Credits at the bottom of the page, minor modifications by me, picture with my ugly face edited by Lollo.
I had to edit the old one to accomodate some minor visual glitches in some browsers, so let me know in the comments or ideas@signal-eleven.com if there’s something wrong with this one as well.
Stay tuned, more to come.

Whilst I do get some (regular) visitors, it surprise me that the RSS feed is low on subscribers.
I guess the reason is that most people don’t even know what RSS syndication is for…I could explain that, but I’ll leave it for a future post.
What EVERYONE should understand, is….drums roll….90s-ish EMAIL SUBSCRIBE!Want to be alerted whenever a new post appears on Signal-Eleven?
Put your email in the box below or in the sidebar on the right, and get an email in your inbox (that should be emptied and processed to zero, right? ;-) ) with the latest story here on Signal Eleven.
(Privacy Policy: I won’t sell your address to anyone. I think I won’t be even allowed to see it, the email service is provided by Feedburner!)

Sorry for the non-activity of these days, I know you’re not checking the site too eagerly (after 2 days without posts the traffic drops to nearly zero)…but of course it’s because you’re all top tech readers using RSS and syndication…
I’ve been in semi-vacation, hangin’ out with friends that were flying by Milano for a few days, and now it’s my turn to fly out for a little while, to Budapest, HUN, to be exact.
I’ll come back with some new content, after the break.
Want to keep the site alive during the stop? Did you try win-get ? Leave a comment about that topic and see if other people found it useful.
Ok you got me, I’m shamelessly begging for comments :-)
Stay tuned, more to come.

This is a question I got quite often (read: 2 or 3 times) in the past few weeks.
The answer is not easy, because most people asking it are friends or family (non computer savvy) that found the URL on my IM status or in my email signature.
Let’s start with “what (is a) Signal Eleven“. Caveat lector: it’s boring.
I tend (somehow improperly) to mix and use the expression “Signal Eleven” and “Segmentation fault” interchangeably.
According to Wikipedia:
“a segmentation fault occurs when a program attempts to access a memory location that it is not allowed to access, or attempts to access a memory location in a way that is not allowed”
In some systems (Posix compliant, but if you’re reading this, it’s not going to tell you much :)) this is notified to the program via a “message” (a signal) called SIGSEGV, that is, usually, signal number 11.
Now you got the “what” .
The “why” is much simpler. This is a frustrating error a new programmer encounters during his experiments with programming, and may have security related implications.
Well, I am a programmer and I’m interested in security. The name reminds me (and my geek readers) of an anomalous situation, like those that I blog about sometimes.
In short: I really liked the name.

I’ve had reports of bad behaviour of my RSS feed (naughty feed! You’ve been a bad, bad feed…)
I sort of know the reason, I’ve been experimenting with ways to redirect the Wordpress based feed (the one generated by the blog engine) to the feedburner feed (I like to keep track of my “Manzonian 4 readers”) and something must have gone wrong.
Truth is, there is no such thing as a drop in solution for a blog, you always have to deal with a myriad of little things (see the problem with the comments on firefox that I yet have to tackle seem to have solved, feedback welcome) that you have to take care of, and, honestly, this website is not on the top of my priority list. I wish it could improve but as time and will allow.
So, dear readers, for the time being I recommend anyone to use the link on the right (the one with the big orang icon) to subscribe this blog using your favorite reader (I suggest my personal favorite, Google Reader).
Let me know if you have troubles with the feeds either in the comments or by contacting me directly.
Stay tuned, more to come.

Scott H Young » Reclaim 75% of Wasted Net Time With a Daily Ritual
I seriously need this one.
As a matter of fact, it’s nothing mind blowing, I had committed myself to something similar the past.
The lack of a daily routine caused by the end of the uni courses and the consequent change of habit made me switch back to unregulated madness.
Got to start over. Anyway, being a good blogger, I’ll try to blog about how my life has changed when I decided that I want to be organized.
Stay tuned, more to come
